On the night of January 19 and 20, 2014, between approximately 11:50 p.m. and 12:15 a.m., simultaneous attempts by Azerbaijani sabotage groups to infiltrate Armenian positions were recorded along the northeastern Jraberd and southeastern sectors of the Artsakh Azerbaijan line of contact.
During the night, Azerbaijani forces launched coordinated attacks in large groups. Armen detected the saboteurs in time, alerted his fellow soldiers, and immediately initiated resistance. Despite being seriously wounded, he refused to retreat and continued fighting. His actions allowed Armenian forces to organize rapidly, repel the assault, and inflict significant losses.
The forward units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Artsakh, having identified the movements of the Azerbaijani sabotage groups, transitioned to an organized defense in both sectors. After inflicting substantial human and material losses, they forced Azerbaijani forces to withdraw to their original positions. During the ensuing firefight, Junior Sergeant Armen Hovhannisyan was killed by a gunshot wound sustained while carrying out his assigned mission at a combat position in the northeastern sector.
