Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev used the platform of the 8th European Political Community Summit in Yerevan to advance a strongly anti-Armenian narrative on regional developments, while also attacking European institutions. Aliyev delivered his remarks via a video message addressed to the summit.
In his message, Aliyev claimed that Azerbaijan “put an end to separatism in Karabakh” in 2023, referring to the military operation that led to the forced depopulation of Artsakh. He described former Artsakh military and political leaders as “separatists” and reiterated Baku’s position on territorial integrity.
Aliyev also targeted the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, accusing them of bias against Azerbaijan. He dismissed multiple European Parliament resolutions that condemned Baku over human rights violations, the situation in Artsakh, and the 2023 offensive.
Referring to recent developments in PACE, Aliyev pointed to the 2024 suspension of Azerbaijan’s delegation credentials, portraying it as an example of “double standards,” despite the move being linked to ongoing concerns over democratic backsliding, human rights abuses, and Azerbaijan’s actions in the region.
The session was attended by Armenian officials, including Nikol Pashinyan. No public response was voiced during the event to Aliyev’s statements.
