Azerbaijan has expanded and reinforced a military position inside Armenia’s Syunik Province on territory occupied during Azerbaijani incursions in 2021, according to satellite-image analysis by journalist David Galstyan.

Galstyan said the Azerbaijani position extends approximately three kilometers into Armenian territory, based on Google Maps data and a 1974 Soviet General Staff map.

In May 2024, Yerevan and Baku agreed that the delimitation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border would be carried out on the basis of Soviet-era General Staff maps. Despite that agreement, Azerbaijan has continued reinforcing positions in areas identified by those maps as Armenian territory.

Galstyan compared satellite imagery from May and July 2025. Areas marked in orange show sections of the military position that were newly constructed or expanded during that period. More recent imagery suggests that work at the site may have continued.

The location is particularly sensitive because it lies along one of Armenia’s narrowest territorial corridors. At this point, only about 26 kilometers of Armenian territory separate the Azerbaijani position from the border with Nakhijevan.

Galstyan has also previously documented the expansion of another Azerbaijani military position slightly southeast of the site.
