The Armenian Argentine club Deportivo Armenio ended its season one step away from promotion to Argentina’s second division after reaching the Primera B final, Sportaran.com reports.
Based in Ingeniero Maschwitz and representing the Armenian community, Deportivo Armenio endured an uneven campaign. The club finished only 16th in the Apertura but rebounded strongly with a fourth place finish in the Clausura. That surge lifted Armenio to fourth place in the overall standings and secured a spot in the promotion playoffs, where a single ticket to the higher division was at stake.
In the postseason, Deportivo Armenio delivered under pressure. The team defeated Sportivo Italiano 2 to 1 and then edged Argentino de Merlo by the same scoreline. The run ended in the final, where Armenio lost the two legged tie to Acassuso, falling 0 to 1 away and drawing 1 to 1 at home.
The club also made a notable impact in the Copa Argentina. In the round of 32, Deportivo Armenio stunned top flight side Talleres Cordoba in a dramatic 4 to 3 victory. The cup run ended in the round of 16, where Armenio narrowly lost 3 to 2 against another Primera Division team, Deportivo Riestra.
Despite missing out on promotion, Deportivo Armenio’s season stands as a clear statement. The club proved it can compete with elite opposition and remains a serious contender for promotion going forward, according to Sportaran.com.
