The church, consecrated in 2004, was built with funding from philanthropist Alice Ohanian and is dedicated to the prominent Armenian Catholicos, St. Nerses the Great.
The reported incident follows claims over the past month that Azerbaijani forces have destroyed significant Armenian religious sites in occupied Stepanakert, including the Holy Mother of God Cathedral
