Heavy rains have once again damaged the temporary pedestrian bridge over the Debed River in Karkop village. Continued rain could cause further flooding and damage, warns the administrative head.
Previous floods on May 25-26 caused significant destruction, affecting several communities and resulting in four fatalities. Most residents lack basic amenities and are living in rented housing elsewhere.
On May 26, 2024, heavy rains triggered floods in Armenia, causing the Debed, Aghstev, and Tashir rivers to overflow. Four casualties have been confirmed, with 269 individuals evacuated from the affected area. Multiple bridges collapsed, and various transportation routes were disrupted, including train services between Yerevan and Tbilisi, as well as the primary border crossing between Armenia and Georgia.
Additionally, hundreds of people were cut off from water, gas, and electricity supplies. Officials stated that emergency food and clean water deliveries were underway.
Meanwhile, the Armenian government is seeking volunteers and support as it deals with the cleanup following the floods.
