Thirty four years ago today, Artsakh voted “Yes” to independence.

On December 10, 1991, a referendum was held in the Nagorno Karabakh Republic to declare independence, establish the NKR, and create legitimate governing institutions.

An overwhelming majority, 99.89 percent of participants, voted in favor of independence.

International observers noted that the referendum took place amid armed aggression against the NKR. During this period, the city of Stepanakert and surrounding settlements were under continuous artillery fire from Azerbaijani armed forces. On the day of the vote, ten civilians were killed and eleven were injured.

Following the referendum, on January 6, 1992, the Supreme Council proclaimed Artsakh an independent state.
