This year marks a pivotal milestone in Armenia’s cultural history as the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Established in 1925 by Arshak Adamian and Alexander Spendiaryan, the orchestra has stood for a century as the flagship of Armenian symphonic music, shaping the rich Armenian musical culture and history.

The ANPO was established as Armenia was forging a new national identity with Soviet framework. Over the decades, the orchestra was led by a succession of notable maestros including Ohan Durian, Loris Tjeknavorian and Varely Gergiev. It continues to grow as a vibrant cultural institution, continuously evolving while honoring the legacies of Armenian composers such as Arno Babadjanyan, Aram Khachaturian and Edvard Mirzoyan.

The orchestra performs regularly at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, and hosts annual Yerevan International Musical Festival, attracting global talent and fostering new generations through masterclasses and educational outreach. The current director and conductor of the orchestra is Maestro Eduard Topchjan, who leads the new millennium by his and the orchestra’s commitment to promoting cultural, musical awareness in local audiences, performing classical and operatic music in addition to national and contemporary music.

In honor of its anniversary, the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra is organizing a yearlong celebration featuring concerts with the participation of renowned musicians and conductors, as well as regional and international tours.

Therefore, the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra stands as a symbol of cultural endurance and ambition – a living testament to the power of music to cross borders, uplift our nation and echo the rich history of Armenian culture.
