Karen Khachanov has reached the US Open semifinals for the second time in his career after Belgian Alexander Blockx was forced to retire from their quarterfinal due to injury.
Khachanov was leading 6-2, 7-5, 3-2 when Blockx withdrew after one hour and 37 minutes. The result sends Khachanov into his first US Open semifinal since 2022 and the third Grand Slam semifinal of his career.
The 30-year-old is unseeded in New York this year and has conceded only 59 games on his way to the semifinals, the fewest by an unseeded US Open semifinalist in the Open Era.
Khachanov will face top seed Alexander Zverev for a place in his first Grand Slam final. The two last met at a Grand Slam-level event in the final of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where Zverev defeated Khachanov 6-3, 6-1 to win gold.
Their most recent completed meeting, however, went Khachanov’s way. He defeated Zverev in three sets in the 2025 Toronto semifinals.
Khachanov previously reached the US Open semifinals in 2022, losing to eventual finalist Casper Ruud.
