Armenia is set to acquire Czech-made L-39 Skyfox advanced trainer and light combat aircraft, marking an upgrade to the country’s military aviation capabilities. The aircraft are expected to arrive in Armenia soon, according to an October 20 statement by Defense Minister Suren Papikyan.
Earlier reports from Czech defense industry sources indicated that aircraft manufacturer Aero Vodochody was producing four L-39 Skyfox jets for the Armenian Armed Forces. Although the exact number and delivery schedule have not been officially confirmed, the latest announcement provides the clearest indication yet that Armenia is proceeding with the acquisition.
In June, Aero Vodochody disclosed that it was completing production of four Skyfox aircraft for an undisclosed customer, without identifying the buyer or specifying a delivery date.
The L-39 Skyfox, previously designated L-39NG, is a new-generation subsonic military aircraft designed for advanced pilot training, light combat operations, air patrol, and reconnaissance missions. It features modern avionics and five external hardpoints capable of carrying weapons and military equipment, including gun pods and rocket launchers.
The Czech manufacturer has also developed a specialized counter-drone configuration capable of targeting unmanned aerial vehicles, including jet-powered drones. However, the exact equipment and weapons intended for Armenia have not been officially disclosed.
Armenia already operates the older L-39 Albatros aircraft. The acquisition of the Skyfox would modernize its existing military aviation fleet, strengthen pilot training capabilities, and potentially expand its capacity for light combat and reconnaissance operations.
